Genre: Romantic Comedy eBook
Copyright: January 2004
Series: Dunno if part of series and dont care, either.
Pages: 41,656 words
Reason for Reading: Found it on my ebook reader. If I knew beforehand that it was a romantic comedy, I probably wouldnt have started it. I thought it was one of those paranormal shapeshifter stories from the title. 😉
Content warnings: Nothing too offensive.
Plot: 22 year old heiress, Marissa, escapes from the basement of her mansion for a week so that she can live a little and cross off stuff on her “Wild” to-do list. Throw in a serial killer, a juvenile delinquent, a US Marshall or two, eight animals from the animal shelter, plus many more characters as the story goes along.
Ramblings: About a quarter to a third into the story, I was likin’ it. I prefer to watch romantic comedies rather than reading them but I was finding the madcap heiress humor pretty funny and there was good rapport between Marissa and the Hero. I found the transitions from chapter to chapter a bit abrupt and it became more annoying as more and more new characters were introduced.
I did like the character of the juvenile delinquent who became Marissa’s secretary but in a story this size, there was no need and no room to go into his home life with his drug addict sister. Dont get me started on the serial killer storyline which was played straight and not for laughs and didnt jive with the romantic comedy beginning.
In the end, I almost didnt want to finish it because it really had veered off course. I felt disgruntled, like a classic romantic comedy fan being promised Carole Lombard and My Man Godfrey and instead getting . . . . the mess that was Madonna in Who’s That Girl.
